Karachi, July 1 (SocialNews.XYZ) Karachi police on Friday arrested 27 employees of a mobile phone company following a violent mob protest for alleged blasphemy, media reported.

A Karachi South Police spokesman said in a statement that Preedy Police Station SHO received reports around 11 a.m. that a ‘Wi-Fi device’ had been installed at the Star City Mall which allegedly broadcast comments against the Companions of the Holy Prophet, Dawn reported. .

Witnesses at the site told Dawn.com that protesters, who gathered at the site, damaged signs in the mall, causing the cellphone market to shut down, Dawn reported.

“Realizing the seriousness of the matter, SHO rushed to the scene, shut down the device and seized it,” the statement said, adding that 27 employees of a private company were also arrested.

The spokesman said a commission of inquiry led by the Saddar SP has been set up to investigate the matter and if anyone is involved in blasphemy, strict legal action will be taken against them.

Meanwhile, South SSP Asad Raza told Dawn.com that police are trying to verify, with the help of the CyberCrime wing of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), who were all responsible for the installation of the device.

“Twenty-seven men [from] Samsung offices have been arrested and an investigation is ongoing,” he added, Dawn reported.

For its part, Samsung Pakistan released a statement saying the company remains neutral on religious sentiments.

“Samsung Electronics has reiterated its firm position that it strives to maintain objectivity on all matters of religious significance…Referring to recent developments in Karachi, Samsung Electronics remains firm in its position that the company has the utmost respect for all religious sentiments and beliefs and holds the religion of Islam in the utmost respect.”

The company also said it “immediately” launched an internal investigation into the matter, Dawn reported.
